Kenmore Plum on Myrobalan (Spring 2024)
A disease-resistant, self-fertile, dual-purpose European plum. Also known as NY 9, NY 58.900.9.
Kenmore is an excellent trouble-free plum from Cornell. The tree is healthy and vigorous, with a spreading habit. It can be slow to reach full production, but it will set very heavily once mature. This tree has good resistance to black knot, brown rot, and leaf spot. It has also shown good tolerance to attacks of European red mite. Kenmore is reported to be fully self-fertile. It's a great choice for the back yard.
Ripening with Stanley (early September in upstate NY), the fruit is a large, high-quality, aromatic prune-plum. The skin is powder-blue with a waxy white bloom, purple under the wax, and the flesh is amber-green. It is freestone, non-shattering, and fully crack free. This variety is great for fresh eating and firm enough to pack and ship to wholesale markets. The flesh holds its form well when canned.
Kenmore is a great disease-resistant alternative to Stanley. It is a cross of Standard and Stanley, selected by John P. Watson in 1971.
