Viking Apple Scionwood (Spring 2024)

A large, aromatic early apple with deep red skin. Also known as PRI 1033-5.

Viking is a grower-friendly, early apple. The tree is vigorous and precocious. Though it has some susceptibility to scab, it is resistant to fireblight, powdery mildew, and cedar-apple rust.

Large, with a skin that is deep red, almost purple, over green, Viking is recommended for fresh eating, baking, cider, and sauce. The flesh is crisp, juicy, and tart, and the flavor is aromatic with tropical and floral notes.

Viking is an early product of the PRI breeding program. Although it was rejected by the developers on account of its susceptibility to scab, growers were impressed by its flavor and it continues to be propagated by small, specialty farms. Its parentage includes Jonathan, Red Delicious, Malus floribunda, William's Early Red, Starr, Early McIntosh, and Rome Beauty.

Clean vs. Regular

Our clean scion is harvested from trees grown on G.16, which is extremely sensitive to viruses. These trees would not have survived if the scion contained viruses. Our clean wood has not been lab tested. Regular = may contain one of the common latent viruses; this is not usually a problem and can be used with most rootstocks.
