Geneva Crab Apple Scionwood (Spring 2024)

A red-fleshed crab that yields a highly acidic juice.

Geneva Crab is a very vigorous, hardy tree that is somewhat susceptible to fireblight but resistant to scab. It is partially self-fertile, but a second variety will be needed for full production. This tree does not produce viable pollen, and it cannot be used as a pollenizer.

Geneva Crab is a solid choice for red cider, jelly, and blending in juice. It is a medium-sized crabapple with high acidity and low sugar.  Its red leaves and bright pink blossoms make it a beautiful choice for a home garden. In upstate New York, it ripens September-October.

Geneva Crab was developed in 1930 by the Ottawa Experimental Farm in collaboration with the New York State Agricultural Research Station in Ottawa. It is an open-pollinated seedling of Malus niedzwetzkyana, which also gave us Almata.

Clean vs. Regular

Our clean scion is harvested from trees grown on G.16, which is extremely sensitive to viruses. These trees would not have survived if the scion contained viruses. Our clean wood has not been lab tested. Regular = may contain one of the common latent viruses; this is not usually a problem and can be used with most rootstocks.
