Nadia Plum on Myrobalan (Spring 2024)

A plum-cherry hybrid developed in Australia. Also known as Nadia Cherryplum, Branchberry™.

This is a new hybridization of plum and cherry that was created by hand pollenizing a Blackamber plum with pollen from a Supreme cherry (Prunus salicina x Prunus avium). The result was a delicious and entirely new type of fruit. Nadia (trademarked as Branchberry™) grows on a large, vigorous semi-upright tree. The fruit is either a small plum or a very large cherry depending on whether you see the world through cherry glasses or plum lenses. It is definitely plum sized, but it has cherry-colored flesh and juice, and the intense sweetness of a cherry (~20 °Brix). The fruit is semi-freestone. We reckon it's worth a try!

Very little data has been collected on this variety to date. We do know that it is not self-fertile, and it should be paired with a Japanese plum for pollenization. A few recommended pollinators are Fortune, Black Amber, Anne Gold, and Aphrodite. Bloom and fruit maturity are both midseason. The breeder is Joseph Rullo of Victoria, New South Wales, Australia.
