Antonovka (Common) Apple on G.969 (Spring 2025)

The most common and ancient apple of Russia, extremely cold hardy. Also known as The People's Apple, Antonowka.

Antonovka is actually a group of apple varieties, the most widespread of which is the Common Antonovka. This tree is easy to grow; it is scab resistant, drought tolerant, and extremely cold hardy– to zone 3. It is slow to produce, but will crop heavily once it starts to bear.

The greenish-yellow apple has a thick skin that protects it from bruising. The flesh is pure white and aromatic, with a high acid content that sweetens when fully ripe. It is a favorite culinary apple in Russia, and it is also used for making cider. Antonovka will store well for up to three months.

Also called The People's Apple, Antonovka is so beloved in Russia that a monument has been dedicated to it in Kursk. In the United States, the variety has found popularity as a rootstock due to its cold hardiness and deep tap-rooting system.
