A very beautiful heirloom apple that stores well.
Pixie Crunch™ Apple on G.210 (Spring 2025)
A sweet little jewel of an apple that children love. Also known as co-op 33.
Ripening in mid-September, Pixie Crunch® is field immune to apple scab, fairly resistant to fire blight, but suscepible to cedar-apple rust and powdery mildew. The tree is spreading with a spindly tendency that will require thoughtful pruning. Fruit should be thinned to maintain annual bearing.
This apple is the perfect size for little hands. Dr. Jules Janick, horticulturalist at Purdue University writes: "It has a terrific flavor. People tell me its their favorite apple. . . . Apples get too big. Who wants to eat an apple that weights half a pound?" Having Golden Delicious and Rome Beauty in its ancestry, Pixie Crunch is a deep red jewel with yellowish flesh that is sweet, rich, and spicy. The texture is exceptionally crisp and breaking, comparable to Honeycrisp. This apple is perfect for home gardens and U-pick orchards.
Pixie Crunch® is one of the many scab-resistant varieties developed by Purdue, Rutgers, and Illinois Universities. The cross of two breeding selections was made in 1971 and the selection was made in 1978.
