A very beautiful heirloom apple that stores well.
Amere De Berthecourt Apple on G.11 (Spring 2025)
A popular bittersweet French cider variety. Also known as Amer de Berthecourt, Berthecourt.
Amere de Berthecourt is prolific and easy to grow, with a vigorous, spreading habit. This tree is somewhat susceptible to scab, powdery mildew, and canker, and it is particularly sensitive to fireblight during bloom. Like many cider varieties, it will need to be thinned to maintain annual bearing.
Grown from a pippin at Parisis Fontain in Berthecourt, Normandy in the 1850s, this heirloom variety has remained a favorite of French cider makers. The fruit is small, yellow with a pink blush, and oblate. Unsuitable for eating, this apple produces a rich amber juice with a long and bitter finish. Honeyed sugars with notes of vanilla and grass are also detectable. (From WSU: Tannin (percent tannic acid): 0.34; Acid (percent malic acid): 0.20; pH: 4.11; SG: 1.049; oBrix: 12.2.)
