A very beautiful heirloom apple that stores well.
Muscadet De Dieppe Apple on G.890 (Spring 2025)
A traditional French bittersweet cider apple.
Muscadet de Dieppe is a cold-hardy, vigorous, and upright tree. It is somewhat disease resistant, but it suffers from low productivity. This apple is used exclusively for hard cider; it is not suitable for fresh eating.
Highly regarded by French cider makers since the 1750s, Muscadet de Dieppe is a smallish apple that ripens to a orange-red and is russeted around the stem. It yields a juice that is dark and somewhat bitter. It is described as douce amère "bittersweet" and tendre "soft." Fruit should be pressed within three weeks after harvest. (From WSU: Tannin (percent tannic acid): 0.21; Acid (percent malic acid): 0.26; pH: 4.12; SG: 1.057; oBrix 14.2.)
This apple has been a recommended variety for cider production in France since 1958.
