An attractive, highly disease-resistant apple, ideal for organic growers.
Vilberie Apple on G.935 (Spring 2024)
A traditional bittersweet cider apple from France.
This tree is vigorous, precocious, and productive. It is susceptible to fireblight and it will need thinning to maintain annual bearing. The bloom is very late and the tree is triploid, so especial care should be taken when choosing pollenizers. For full fertility, two late-blooming diploid trees will need to be present. This said, Vilberie is also partially self-fertile, and it will be somewhat productive under less than ideal conditions. This apple is used exclusively for cider production; it is not suitable for fresh eating.
Vilberie is a green apple with a pink blush. It yields a highly astringent, full-bodied, fruity cider. The bitterness is harsh and best used in blending. If you are looking for a very stout cider, this is the one. Eve's Cidery writes that this "French bittersweet is extremely perfumed with the classic “BSA” aromas we love in French cider apples."
Vilberie is a French cider variety from Brittany. It was first brought to the UK in the mid-19th century.
