Victoria Plum on Marianna GF 8-1 (Spring 2021)
The classic British garden plum.
Victoria is a medium-sized, upright-spreading, hardy tree. It tends to overcrop and fruit should be thinned to avoid breakage. Victoria is self-fertile, but we recommend planting it with another European plum for best quality fruit. It is notoriously susceptible to fungal infections.
This is a large and very attractive midseason plum. Ovate, with deep red coloring, it has the look of a "classic" plum. These plums also pass through a very pretty tropical orange phase, but they are not ready for harvest at this point. The yellow flesh is coarse, sweet, and mild. This is the favorite plum of British bakers, used for pies, crumbles, and preserves. The Plum and Marzipan Pie recipe from the BBC looks like a winner to me.
The exact origin of Victoria is obscure. We do know that it is named after Queen Victoria, and that by 1844 it had been introduced commercially by Denyer Nursery, under the name Denyer Victoria.
