Chapin Pear on OHxF 87 (Spring 2025)
A seckel-type sweet pear that is fireblight resistant.
The tree is open, vase-form, productive, and vigorous. More importantly, it is highly resistant to fireblight making it a great pear for the home gardener.
Ready for harvest mid-August in NY, Chapin will ripen after about 2 weeks off the tree. This is a greenish-yellow, heavily russetted pear that is just a little larger than a Seckel (Sugar Pear). Like Seckel, one of its parents, Chapin is richly flavored, sweet, and aromatic. This is a snacking pear of the highest quality.
Chapin was bred in Geneva, NY by U.P. Hedrick. It was first introduced in 1945.
