A very beautiful heirloom apple that stores well.
Redfree Apple on G.11 (Spring 2025)
An attractive, disease-resistant summer apple, perfect for the back yard. Also known as Co-op 13.
Very disease resistant and adaptable to a wide range of growing conditions, this upright and vigorous tree is perfect for the beginner grower or the organic gardener. It is field immune to apple scab and resistant to all other major apple diseases. Redfree will produce reliably annual crops of attractive, red apples.
Ripening toward the end of August in upstate NY, this summer apple is medium sized, glossy red over yellow, and crisp. The flavor is mild and subacid. The fruit will both hold to the tree for a couple of weeks after ripening and store for up to two months after harvest. As an added benefit for the home grower, the ripening season of Redfree is spread out, requiring several pickings.
Redfree comes from the breeding program at Rutgers, Purdue, and Illinois Universities. Bred specifically for disease resistance, this cultivar has Wealthy, Jonathan, Rome Beauty, and Malus floribunda in its ancestry.
