Nehou Apple on G.210 (Spring 2025)
A traditional bittersweet cider apple from France.
This medium-sized tree has a round head of dense twiggy growth, it crops heavily, and it has a strong biennial tendency. It is susceptible to scab and very susceptible to fireblight. Nehou is a triploid and two diploid pollenizers should be present for full fertility. Used exclusively for cider, this apple is not suitable for fresh eating.
The fruit is a dull pink striped over a green-yellow background. When ripe it becomes greasy and butter yellow. It is somewhat russeted and tends to cracking. The flesh is spongy and cream colored, and the juice is astringent, yielding a cider that is bittersweet. The fruit tends to drop as it ripens. (From WSU: Tannin (percent tannic acid): 0.34; Acid (percent malic acid): 0.32; pH: 4.10; SG: 1.056; oBrix 14.0.)
Nehou was brought to Herefordshire, England from France by H. P. Bulmer & Co. in the mid 20th century. It came to America in 1949.
