Muscat De Bernay Apple on G.890 (Spring 2025)
A traditional bittersweet cider apple from France. Also known as Muscadet, Muscadet de Bernay.
This tree is very tall, upright-spreading, vigorous, and tends to biennialism. It is slightly susceptible to fireblight, powdery mildew, scab, and canker.
Muscadet de Bernay is a large apple, striped and splashed red over yellow. The fruit tends to drop before ripening. The greenish flesh yields a robust golden bittersweet juice that is used primarily for hard cider; this apple is not considered suitable for fresh eating. (From WSU: Tannin (percent tannic acid): 0.19; Acid (percent malic acid): 0.28; pH: 3.94; SG: 1.050; oBrix 11.9.)
First grown near the commune of Bernay at the site of a Benedictine Abbey, Muscadet de Bernay arrived in America in 1952.
