A traditional French cider apple classified as bittersweet. Also known as Kermorrien, Kêrmerien.
This is a medium-sized tree, upright with a rounded form. It is susceptible to powdery mildew and scab. Careful pruning and thinning is recommended to maintain annual bearing. Kermerrien is used exclusively for cider; it is not suitable for fresh eating.
Kermerrien is an old French apple, traditionally one of the most commonly used apples in Breton for cider (cidre). This apple is smallish and slightly tapered. The skin is yellow blushed and striped with a pinkish red. It is a "second season" apple in France (October-early November), and it yields a pale golden juice that is classified as douce amere, or bittersweet. It was added to the recommended list of cider apples in 1949. (From WSU: Tannin (percent tannic acid): 0.32; Acid (percent malic acid): 0.2; pH: 3.88; SG: 1.050; oBrix 12.5.)
