An aromatic dessert apple, probably a Cox's offspring. Also known as Holsteiner Cox, Vahldiks Cox.

Holstein is a large, vigorous, spreading tree. It Is a triploid, and two diploid pollenizers will need to be present for full pollination. This tree is susceptible to fireblight and canker, very susceptible to powdery mildew, but resistant to scab.

The apple is round, conical, and flat bottomed. It is suffused with a red-orange blush over a yellow backgrond and the yellowish flesh is coarse and chunky. This fruit is probably a chance seedling of Cox's Orange Pippin, and it has the aromatic qualities of Cox's without all of the difficulties in cultivation. The flesh does not brown after cutting.

Holstein originated in Germany in 1918. It was raised in a backyard garden in Holstein by a teacher named Vahldik.
