An attractive, highly disease-resistant apple, ideal for organic growers.
Margil Apple Scionwood (Spring 2024)
A small, russeted dessert apple of the highest quality. Also known as Margill, Reinette Muscat, Reinette Musquee, Never-fail, .
The tree is small and slender, making it suitable for a small garden. Margil is a light cropper. It is resistant to scab and susceptible to canker and fireblight.
This small apple fits perfectly into the palm of your hand, and it feels like it was always there. The green and orange skin is overlaid with a fine golden russet that gives the apple a pleasant velvety feel, and the flesh is firm and white with a greenish tinge. It has a rich, balanced flavor with notes of honey and nuts. In 1884, Robert Hogg wrote of Margil: "One of the finest desert apples, a rival of the Ribston Pippin, excelling it in juiciness, and being of a better size for dessert." Margil is harvested early October in upstate NY, and it keeps well in storage for about two months. This apple has also found favor with cider makers. (From WSU: Tannin (percent tannic acid): 0.07; Acid (percent malic acid): 0.57; pH: 3.49; SG: 1.049; oBrix 11.8.)
Margil was likely brought to England from France; it is reported to have been growing at Brompton Park Nursery as early as the 1750s.
