Laxton's Superb Apple Scionwood (Spring 2024)

A late-season Cox's Orange Pippin progeny.

Laxton's is a Cox's progeny that is significantly easier to grow than its parent. It is a very vigorous, spreading tree that crops heavily but tends to biennialism. It will need diligent thinning. It is resistant to powdery mildew and canker, but susceptible to fireblight and scab. Partially self-fertile, Laxton's will acheive better productivity in the presence of a pollenizer.

This handsome late-season apple is medium to large, round, and slightly conic. The skin is a greenish yellow blushed dull red with darker streaks. The creamy flesh is firm and fine textured. An excellent dessert apple, it has a sweet, subacid, aromatic Cox's-like flavor. Harvest this apple as soon as it is ripe, as it drops readily. It will store well for about two months.

Bred by the Laxton Bros. in Bedford England in 1897, Laxton's was introduced in 1922. It received the Award of Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society in 1919 and a First Class Certificate in 1921. It is also the parent of Tydeman's Late Orange and Merton Pearmain.

Clean vs. Regular

Our clean scion is harvested from trees grown on G.16, which is extremely sensitive to viruses. These trees would not have survived if the scion contained viruses. Our clean wood has not been lab tested. Regular = may contain one of the common latent viruses; this is not usually a problem and can be used with most rootstocks.
