A very beautiful heirloom apple that stores well.
G.41 Apple Rootstock (Spring 2025)
An M.9 class rootstock that is resistant to replant disease. Also known as Geneva 41.
Slightly more dwarfing than M.9, G.41 is almost the perfect rootstock. It has excellent fruit size, induces wide branch angles, and reduces biennial bearing with Honeycrisp, giving it much greater cumulative yield than M.9 or B.9. It is cold hardy, and it is resistant to all major diseases, including woolly apple aphid. The only problems we have had with this stock are brittle roots and breakage at the graft union in the nursery. Breakage has also been reported for young trees carrying heavy loads. We have switched to 100% whip-and-tongue grafting on G.41, and this has eliminated breakage in the nursery, but we do strongly recommend that young trees in the orchard receive support for their first few years. Susceptibility to latent virus has not yet been determined.
G.41 performs very well in replant situations.
G.41 is the first true dwarfing rootstock with WAA resistance, a major breakthrough for New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, Brazil, Argentina, and Chile. High-density planting recommendations for weak cultivars are 2.5-3.5' x 11-12' (1584-1037 trees/acre), and for vigorous cultivars 3-3.5' x 11-12' (1320-1037 trees/acre).
G.41 came out of the Geneva, NY breeding program and the work of my father, Dr. Jim Cummins.
