These apples and pears were grown in North America during the Colonial Era and through the time of the American Civil War. Some of them have enjoyed centuries of sustained public life, while others faded from view as the populist stars of the 20th century dominated grocery stores.
Today a renewed interest in "all things orchard" – fueled in part by the craft cider boom – brings these heirloom classics back into circulation to the delight of hobbyists and growers across the country. For more on the history of the apple in America and around the world, see our page Fruit Tree Books. A few notables include:
Roxbury Russet apple – One of America's oldest apples, good for storage, baking, and cider. Also known as Belpre Russet, Boston Russet, Hewe's Russet, Putnam Russet, Leather Coat.
Harrison apple – The most important apple for traditional Newark cider production. Also known as Harrison's Cider, Long Stem, Osborne Apple.
Northern Spy apple – An excellent all-purpose, late-season apple, now popular with cider makers. Also known as Northern Spice, Northern Pie Apple. An all-time favorite in our u-pick orchards, Indian Creek Farm.
