SunCrisp® Apple on G.30 (Spring 2022)

A reliable, high-quality Cox's Orange Pippin progeny. Also known as NJ 55.

SunCrisp® is a vigorous, upright, and precocious tree. Resistant to scab but susceptible to cedar-apple rust and fireblight, this tree is very easy to grow in rust-free areas. It is also susceptible to blister spot, but this is a minor cosmetic problem that will be of concern only to commercial growers. SunCrisp® is naturally dwarfing and not spreading, making it a good choice for growers with limited space. Heavy crops will need thinning to maintain annual bearing.

This apple is a Cox's and Golden Delicious cross. It is a large apple, golden yellow with an attractive orange-red blush. Needless to say, the flesh is crisp and breaking. The flavor is an excellent blend of Golden Delicious sweetness and the complex acidity of Cox's. Storing well for up to six months, this apple continues to develop its flavor, and tasters find notes of aniseed and caramel as it matures. SunCrisp® is also an outstanding culinary apple.

SunCrisp® was developed by Dr. Fred Hough and the Rutgers University breeding program. Its pedigree includes Cox's Orange Pippin, Golden Delicious, and Cortland. The selection was made in 1971, and the cultivar was introduced in 1992.
