Discovery Apple on G.11 (Spring 2024)

An early-season apple popular in the UK.

Discovery has some resistance to scab. It is a compact tree that is naturally dwarfing. For cold-climate growers, the bloom is reported to be frost hardy.

This is a bright red, medium-sized apple that is flattish and slightly ribbed toward the calyx. It ripens early August, and the flesh is crisp and bleeds pink near the skin. The flavor is excellent, high acid with hints of strawberry. This apple needs to be eaten quickly as it quickly becomes mealy in storage.

Discovery first appeared as a seedling of Worcester Pearmain in a garden in Langham, Essex around 1940. The discovery of Discovery is attributed to a Mr. Drummer.
