Worcester Pearmain Apple on G.935 (Spring 2024)

A strawberry-flavored English heirloom.

Worcester Pearmain is a moderately vigorous tree that is susceptible to fireblight, scab, and canker but resistant to powdery mildew. It is reported to be partially self-fertile.

Ripening early, this apple has a skin that is deep red over yellow-green and speckled with russet lenticels. The flesh is crisp, firm, and white, with a perfumed sweetness that is distinctly strawberry-like. The apples are best eaten fresh from the tree; they do not store well.

Worcester Pearmain is from Worcester, England, where it was first propagated by William Hayes in the 1870's. Its parentage is not certainly known, but it is likely that one of its parents was Devonshire Quarrenden, which also has a strong strawberry flavor. This tree received a First Class Certificate from the Royal Horticultural Society 1875, and it has been used as a breeding parent for many other apples, including Katja, William Crump, Akane, and Pearl.
