Transcendent Crab Apple on G.969 (Spring 2024)

An heirloom crabapple with juicy, orange fruit.

Hardy to zone 3, Transcendent Crab produces abundant crops of orange fruit. The tree large and spreading, and it produces a fragrant pink and white bloom. It is very susceptible to fireblight, and the USDA lists Transcendent as a triploid, so it should not be used as a pollenizer. Two diploid apples will need to be present for full fertility.

The apple is large for a crab and apricot colored with a pink blush. The flesh is creamy orange and juicy, and it has a reputation for making an excellent jelly. Transcendent Crab does not store well; it should be eaten or processed soon after harvesting.

Transcendent Crab is first mentioned 1844, but it is of unknown origin. It was a favorite of the apple breeder Albert Etter, who used it to create Etter's Gold and Eden Crab™.
