Alkmene Apple on MM.111 (Spring 2024)

A delicious early apple that is very easy to grow. Also known as Alkemene, Early Windsor.

The Alkmene tree is of medium vigor, upright, and precocious. It crops heavily and is reliably annual. Its compact character and resistance to most major diseases–it is especially scab resistant–make it an excellent choice for the backyard. This variety is, however, susceptible to fireblight, and home growers should consider applications of copper. Alkmene is even self-fertile, although it should be noted that it will be more productive if coupled with a pollenizer.

Alkmene is a Cox's Orange Pippin cross, and it has inherited many Cox's characteristics. It produces medium-sized apples that are orange-red over a yellow-green background. The flesh is crisp, juicy, dense, and aromatic, with a balanced flavor that is both honeyed and robust. It is a well-regarded dessert apple in Germany and Holland, where it is grown commercially. This is a perfect "starter apple" for the beginner horticulturist.

Alkmene won the Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society in 1998.
