Northland Crab Apple on G.935 (Spring 2024)

A cold-hardy hybrid crab from Minnesota, good for fresh eating and wildlife planting. Also known as MN 1423.

The tree is medium sized, very hardy–to zone 3–and productive. Northland is slightly susceptible to fireblight and scab, and it has a biennial tendency.

The Northland apple is similar to its parent Dolgo in shape, bright to deep red, and about 1.5 inches diameter. The flesh is dark yellow tinged with red, crisp, and tender. The flavor is mildly subacid; it is an excellent dessert apple and makes great jelly, sauce, and pickles. The fruit hangs well and this tree is recommended for wildlife planting.

Northland was created at the University of Minnesota Fruit Breeding Program. It is a cross of McIntosh and Dolgo that was selected in 1938 and released in 1957.
