Mollie's Delicious Apple on G.935 (Spring 2024)

An attractive, early-season dessert apple with a low chill-hours requirement. Also known as NJ 28, Mollies.

Mollie's Delicious is a productive, annual tree with an upright-spreading habit. It is late blooming, but the bloom is extended, making it a great pollenizer. This tree also has a low chill-hours requirement (500 hours), and is a good choice for the warmer climates in southern states and Southern California. It is susceptible to fireblight, powdery mildew, and scab, but resistant to cedar-apple rust. Southern growers will be glad to know that Mollie's has demonstrated alternaria resistance.

Do not confuse this apple with Red Delicious! Mollie's is a far superior fruit, and is actually descended from Golden Delicious. This attractive apple is quite large, red washed over yellow, ribbed, and distinctly heart shaped. It ripens early and the flavor has the sweetness of Golden Delicious balanced by the aromatic complexity of Red Gravenstein, another parent. It hangs well on the tree and will store for up to ten weeks. If you want an apple that is actually delicious, Mollie's is an excellent choice.

Mollie's Delicious was developed by G. W. Schneider at the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station in New Brunswick. It was selected in 1956 and introduced in 1966.
