Eden Peach on Nemaguard (Spring 2025)

You are viewing a tree that will ship in Spring 2025. You can also find trees for Spring 2024.

A white-fleshed peach that performs well in the North. Also known as NY 1466.

Eden is a vigorous, very productive tree that is tolerant, though not resistant, to perennial canker, a disease that presents difficulties for northern growers. Eden is self-fertile, and a second variety is not required for pollenization. This peach was developed by the Geneva Research Station in the 1940s and released for the first time in 1961. The primary objective of the breeding program was improved cold hardiness. It was withdrawn due to lack of commercial interest in white-fleshed peaches, and released again in 1978. The fruit has a creamy, thin skin that is about 60% overlaid with red, and the pubescence (fuzz) is dense and short. The white flesh is firm, almost crisp, and it browns slowly after cutting.

This peach was consistently productive at Littletree Orchards in Ithaca, New York, a growing environment that is colder than Geneva, New York where the peach was developed. My older brother James planted this peach in his U-pick orchard in the 70s, and it became a long-standing local favorite. But peach trees typically live no more than 30 years, and by 2006, when no nurseries had propagated Eden for many years, the variety was one the verge of extinction. I drove out to the old farm at Littletree and found a single tree still alive. It was sick and dying, but it had enough life left in it for me to salvage a stick of wood. All our Eden trees now come from this one cutting.
