Sangre De Toro Apple on G.890 (Spring 2025)

You are viewing a tree that will ship in Spring 2025. You can also find trees for Spring 2024.

A traditional cider apple from Spain.

Sangre de Toro ("Bulls Blood") is a medium-vigor tree that blooms early. It is moderately resistant to scab and mildew, and a tendency to biennialism is likely. In our orchard we have found that this variety is somewhat susceptible to fireblight when pressure is high. Ripening time is mid-October in NY state.

This is an Spanish cider (sidra) apple, originating in Galicia, northwest Spain. The fruit is a medium-sized, somewhat flat red apple with greenish flesh that is stained red near the skin. It yields a juice that is classified as "ácida." Sangre de Toro is used mainly in cider production in Spain, but it is also sweet enough for fresh eating.

Spanish cider apples have not yet been widely tested in the United States, but the native climate of these apples should be taken into consideration. Northwest Spain enjoys abundant year-round rainfall, mild summers, and temperate winters. Costal winter temperatures are typically in the 50s and summer temperatures are in the 70s.
