An attractive, highly disease-resistant apple, ideal for organic growers.
NY 414-1 Apple on G.11 (Spring 2024)
For Macoun fans who want a disease-resistant tree. Also known as NY 75414-1.
This tree is very upright, hardy, vigorous, and disease resistant; it is completely free of scab and resistant to the other major apple diseases. It is precocious and productive; thinning is recommended to maintain fruit quality.
Never named and never released by Cornell, NY 414-1 is a Liberty cross that has all the great qualities of a Macoun (one of Liberty's parents). The apple is large and the skin has a green background that is overlaid with a dark red that deepens with a smoky bloom. The white flesh is crisp, juicy, and sprightly. Ripening at the same time as Liberty, this apple will store very well, especially if humidity is controlled to prevent drying. NY 414-1 is a great apple for the Macoun fan who wants a trouble-free tree. Let us know if you come up with a good name for it!
