Flower Of Kent Apple on G.202 (Spring 2023)

The apple that famously inspired Isaac Newton. Also known as Isaac Newton's Tree.

This storied tree is vigorous and spreading, ideal for sitting under when preparing to make groundbreaking observations about the behavior of physical matter. It is a partial tip bearer and is susceptible to fireblight. Biennialism is not a reported issue with Flower of Kent, but it is an heirloom variety, and thinning is always a good idea in this case.

The fruit is striped red over green, huge, and blocky; it probably falls with a distinct thud. A traditional English pie apple, the flavor is sub-acid and the soft flesh melts to a puree when baked. It stores well for about two months. The size and softness of Flower of Kent make it unappealing for fresh eating; this apple is a collector's item with culinary value.

Flower of Kent was first mentioned in the 15th century, but it got its real fame in 1666 when it inspired Isaac Newton's theory of gravitational laws. Newton's original tree still survives at Woolsthorpe Manor and it is now about 350 years old. The majority of the Flower of Kent trees in existence today are propagated from the wood of the original tree.
