Coat Jersey Apple on G.11 (Spring 2022)

A traditional English cider apple.

Conflicting accounts of this variety have caused Claude Jolicoeur to speculate that the North American Coat Jersey may not be the same apple as the Somerset Coat Jersey. In either case, the (North American) Coat Jersey is described in Good Fruit Grower (2016) as "biennial and scab susceptible, vigorous." This apple is used exclusively for cider production; it is not suitable for fresh eating.

The apple is flattish, small-mid sized, streaked with a splotchy red over a green background. The juice is high in tannin, producing a cider that bright and funky.

Coat Jersey is named for its birthplace, the village Coat in Somerset, while "Jersey" seems to denote a bittersweet cider apple from Somerset (c.f. Stembridge Jersey, Chisel Jersey, Harry Master's Jersey, etc.).
