Pipestone Plum on Myrobalan (Spring 2027)

A very cold-hardy, delicious hybrid plum. Also known as MN 218.

This is a vigorous and very hardy tree. It is not self-fertile and it will need to be grown with another Japanese, hybrid, or native plum for cross-pollination. Recommended hybrid pollinators include Bubblegum® (Toka), Superior, Kaga, and South Dakota. European plums will not polliante Pipestone, and it is not itself regarded as a reliable pollinator.

Ripening mid-season, Pipestone is a large plum with red skin and yellow flesh. It is juicy, sweet, and most suitable for fresh eating or processing as jam or jelly. This is a clingstone plum.

Pipestone was developed at the University of Minnesota Fruit Breeding Farm in Excelsior, MN. It was selected in 1928 and introduced in 1942.
