Howard Miracle Plum on Myrobalan (Spring 2027)
A delicious, yellow Japanese plum. Also known as Howard's Miracle.
This is a spreading, prolific, and very vigorous tree. It has a low chill requirement, making it a popular choice for warm-winter climates. Howard Miracle is not self-fertile and it will need to be planted with another Japanese or hybrid plum for cross pollination. European plums will not pollinate this variety. It blooms mid-late season and appropriate pollinators include Santa Rosa and Bubblegum®.
Howard Miracle is a large, juicy, sweet plum that ripens mid-late season with a skin that varies from golden yellow to fully blushed crimson. The flesh is freestone and the flavor is delicious, with notes of tropical fruit and flowers. Many tasters remark on its pineapple flavor.
Discovered in 1941 and introduced in 1947, this plum was a chance seedling of unknown parentage. It was discovered by Frederick H. Howard, a nurseryman of Montebello CA. At the time of release, Mr Howard speculated his plum to be a cross of European greengage and Satsuma, a cross that is now considered genetically improbable. A miracle, indeed!
