La Crescent Plum on Myrobalan (Spring 2027)
A yellow hybrid plum that makes great jam. Also known as Golden La Crescent, Golden Minnesota.
This is an upright-spreading tree that is very vigorous, cold hardy, and resistant to brown rot. La Crescent is not self-fertile and it should be grown with at least one other Japanese, hybrid, or native plum for cross-pollination. European plums cannot pollinate this tree. Bloom is early-mid, and other hybrid plums that are suitable pollinators include Kaga, South Dakota, Superior, and Bubblegum® (Toka).
La Crescent is a pretty little yellow plum with a pink blush. The fuit is freestone and the flavor is sweet with the apricot notes that we expect from hybrid plums. It is an excellent plum for eating fresh and makes a great jam. Cook them quick - these plums do not store for long.
This plum comes from the University of Minnesota Fruit Breeding Program, which also brought us Alderman, Superior, and Underwood. La Crescent is a cross of Shiro and Howard Yellow (P. americana), and it was introduced in 1923.
