Herefordshire Redstreak Apple on G.202 (Spring 2023)

A traditional English bittersharp cider apple. Also known as Scudamous Crab, Scudmore's Crab, Red Streak, Hereford Red Streak.

This is a low vigor, productive, annual cropper. Cornell rates this tree as highly susceptible to fireblight. Herefordshire Redstreak blooms late, and harvest is mid-September in upstate New York.

The apple is small-to-medium sized and colored yellow with red stripes. The flesh is yellowish, fine grained, and produces an excellent bittersharp cider. The apples should be pressed soon after harvest, as they do not store well. It is reported that the juice is difficult to fine.

Herefordshire Redstreak was first cultivated by Lord Scudmore, ambassador to the French court under King Charles the First, early in the 17th century.
