A hardy, delicious European pear that you can store until Christmas.
Highland is a hardy tree that grows well in both warmer and colder climates. It is susceptible to pear scab and fireblight.
This pear is ready for harvest at the beginning of October in NY, and it can be kept in cold storage for up to two months. It does best with at least a couple of weeks of chilling before being allowed to complete ripening. When ripening is completed at room temperature, the fruit is of the highest quality, with butter-smooth, highly flavored flesh. This pear is large and thin skinned.
Selected in 1944 from a cross of Bartlett and Comice, Highland was released in 1974. The breeder was Dr. George Oberle.
