Cocheco Plum on Myrobalan (Spring 2027)
You are viewing a tree that will ship in Spring 2027. You can also find trees for Spring 2026.
A red-leafed, ornamental plum.
With its deep purplish-red leaves and light pink bloom, Cocheco is an attractive ornamental as well as producing delicious plums! It is a vigorous, upright, somewhat columnar tree and, like many plums, it is susceptible to black knot. It is otherwise easy to grow and reported to be quite winter hardy. Best fruitset will be had if this tree is planted with another Asian plum for cross pollination.
Ripening early, at the same time as Purple Heart, the mid-sized fruit is a deep red that lightens to pinkish orange as it ripens, with orange flesh. The plum is suitable for fresh eating and preserves.
Cocheco was developed by Elwyn Meader (1910-1966), the prolific breeder who worked at the University of New Hampshire. He famously disagreed with patents and royalties on plants saying, "I was working for the taxpayer and the results of my work belong to them." Cocheco was introduced (without patent) in 1968.
