You are viewing a tree that will ship in Spring 2027. You can also find trees for Spring 2026.

A traditional bittersweet cider apple from France. Also known as Frequin Tardif, Tardive de la Sarthe.

This tree is fairly large and spreading. It is moderately susceptible to mildew, canker, and scab, and very susceptible to fireblight. A tendency toward biennialism can be assumed. This is a cider apple; it is not suitable for fresh eating.

Frequin Tardive is a traditional cider variety from France and its adaptability in the United States has not yet been widely studied. Harvest is late season, and the largish yellow apples yield a bittersweet juice that is described as  very bitter (très amère) by French cider makers. This apple was recommended for cultivation for the Pays d'Auge in 1949, and in 1958 it was removed from the recommendation list on account of its susceptibility to fireblight.
