Clapp's Favorite Pear on OHxF 87 (Spring 2026)

You are viewing a tree that will ship in Spring 2026. You can also find trees for Spring 2025.

One of the finest heirloom pears. Also known as Clapp Favorite.

This variety is renowned for its hardiness, vigor, and productivity. The tree is large, vigorous, long-lived, and reliably annual. As an added bonus, the tree also shows above average tolerance for clay soils. Clapp's Favorite is highly susceptible to fireblight, but this is typically not an issue for the backyard grower. Clapp's Favorite is incompatible with quince rootstock.

Clapp's Favorite is harvested about a 10 days before Bartlett and was once considered a standard for home growers. The fruit is large, pale lemon-yellow, with a flavor similar to that of Bartlett. It should be allowed to finish ripening off the tree for best flavor and consistency.

Bred by Thaddeus Clapp in Dorchester, MA, this pear quickly gained favor in France and England. It is first mentioned in 1860 in the notes to a meeting of the Massachusetts Horticultural Society.
