Rousselet De Reims Pear on OHxF 97 (Spring 2025)

An ancient pear once prized in France for its remarkable flavor. Also known as Musk Pear, Spice Pear.

This is a very vigorous, spreading, almost willowy tree that is somewhat susceptible to fireblight.

Ripening shortly before Bartlett, the fruit is small, turbinate, and somewhat irregular. The skin is greenish-yellow, with a red blush in areas exposed to the sun. Don't be fooled by its unassuming appearance! The buttery flesh of Rousselet is extremely sweet, aromatic, and spicy. Second (perhaps) only to Seckel, this pear has been prized for its delicious flavor since the beginning of the Christian era in France.

First recorded in 1588, Rousselet was among the common gifts presented to dignitaries visiting the area of Rheims, France. Charles X, the last king to be crowned in France was gifted Rousselet pears. Rousselet de Reims is even on the USDA Curator's Choice list of favorite pears.
