Jefferis Apple on G.11 (Spring 2026)

A great little disease-resistant apple for the back yard. Also known as Everbearing, Grantham, Jefferies.

This tree is very easy to grow. With an upright-rounded, open habit, it is precocious, prolific, and hardy to zone 4. It is also highly resistant to powdery mildew and scab. In the south, however, wooly aphid can be an issue for Jefferis. Crops should be thinned for best fruit quality.

Jefferis is a smallish, somewhat flat apple with a green-yellow skin that is striped and flushed red. The flesh is juicy and melting, with a rich, aromatic, pear-like flavor. This fruit ripens unevenly and has a long harvest period, but it does not store well for more than a few weeks. These features make it unappealing for commercial growers but a great backyard apple that will be a hit with children.

Jefferis was originally found as a chance seedling on the farm of Isaac Jefferies in Pennsylvania. It was given its name and judged to be the best seedling apple by the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society in 1848.
