Pomme Gris Apple on MM.111 (Spring 2026)

A delicious russet grown by Thomas Jefferson . Also known as Pomme Grise, Gray Apple, Gray Russet, Pomme Gree.

This tree is moderately vigorous and productive with a dense, roundish or spreading habit. Strongly biennial, it will need diligent thinning. It is very susceptible to fireblight.

Pomme Gris "Grey Apple" is a small flattish apple. Its skin is greenish yellow, blushed a dull orange, and fully russeted. The yellowish flesh is firm, crisp, and finely textured, with a brisk, aromatic flavor. In 1875, Robert Hogg wrote that this is a "dessert apple of first-rate quality." Ripening mid-late season, Pomme Gris can be stored for about two months.

This apple was a favorite of Thomas Jefferson, who grew it at Monticello. It originated either in Canada or in Europe. In Apples of New York, Beach writes that the Pomme Gris apple has long been cultivated in Montreal and other portions of the St. Lawrence valley. If this Pomme Gris is identical to the European apple of the same name, then it has also been cultivated in Europe since the 17th century.
