Oullins Golden Gage Plum on Myrobalan (Spring 2022)

A self-fertile, grower-friendly gage plum. Also known as Oullin's, Reine-Claude von Oullins.

Oullins has a ton of advantages for the home grower: This is a very vigorous, upright, and open tree, and it is hardy and tolerant of mites and bacterial spot. The fruit grows in abundant grape-like clusters and will need multiple pickings to keep the clusters open and free of brown rot. Oullins is even self-fertile! We do, however, always recommend a pollination partner for best fruit quality. In this case, another mid-late blooming European plum will work.

The fruit is large by gage standards, with a yellow-green skin, speckled with cream dots and overlaid with a waxy bloom. The yellow flesh is sweet and aromatic. This is a real gourmet variety–one of the best I've tasted. Not only does Oullins produce an exquisite fruit, it also puts out an attractive bloom of large flowers in spring.

Oullins Golden Gage is probably a seedling of Reine Claude (Green Gage). It was discovered at Coligny France and propagated by M. Corsaint, gardener to the Baron de Toisy. It was introduced at Oullins, where it got its name, by the nurseryman M. Massot. Gage plums are very popular in Britain not just as delicious fresh treats, but also for baking into pies and crumbles. They can be puréed for cordials and jellies, and they make an outrageously good jam.
