This is a large, strong tree with an attractive, spreading habit and a reliable annual crop. Bred for disease resistance, Sir Prize is field-immune to scab and resistant to powdery mildew, but it is mildly susceptible to fireblight and cedar-apple rust. As a triploid, this tree needs two diploid pollenizers for full fertility.

Sir Prize is a mid-late season, greenish-yellow apple with a slight pink blush. It shows its Golden Delicious heritage in its large, elongated form and its sweet, crisp, and juicy flesh. The skin is thin and delicate–it bruises if you so much as look at it unkindly–so that this apple is nowhere near sturdy enough for commercial production. For the home grower or U-pick orchard, however, this is a wonderful apple; the lush vigor of the tree combined with the large golden fruit make Sir Prize a very appealing feature in the garden. The flavor is aromatic and more complex than that of Golden Delicious. The fruit hangs very well on the tree, and if you pick it wearing cotton gloves and lay it on a pillow of down, it will store nicely for over three months.

Sir Prize comes from the prolific breeding cooperative of Purdue, Rutgers, and Illinois Universities. It is a cross of Doud Golden Delicious and a breeding selection. (Its ancestry has Golden Delicious on both sides, Rome Beauty, and Malus floribunda for scab resistance.) The cross was made in 1955, and the apple was released in 1975.
