A very beautiful heirloom apple that stores well.
Shizuka Apple Scionwood (Spring 2025)
A highly flavored dessert apple that stores well, sister of Mutsu.
This high-vigor tree is, like Mutsu, a triploid, and two diploid pollenizers should be present for full fertility. Shizuka is moderately susceptible to fireblight, scab, and cedar-apple rust, but it is resistant to powdery mildew. It will be of interest to commercial growers that unlike Mutsu, Shizuka is not subject to blister spot. Fruit should be thinned to maintain annual bearing.
Shizuka is a large yellow apple, blushed red-orange, and somewhat elongated. The flesh is finely textured, slightly soft, and yellowish. Sweeter than Mutsu, the flavor is subacid and complex with tropical notes. The flesh is slow to brown after slicing and fruit will store well for up to three months.
Bred at the Aomori Research Station in Japan, this apple is a cross of Golden Delicious and Indo, the same parents that created Mutsu. It was developed by T. Murakami and released in America in 1979.
