Florina Apple Scionwood (Spring 2025)

A disease-resistant dessert apple that stores well and is good for wildlife.

Florina has it all: it is broadly disease resistant; it is culturally diverse (American parentage bred in France); it stores well; it can be used as a wildlife apple. Florina is a vigorous and precocious tree with a spreading habit. It is a tip bearer that is resistant to fireblight, powdery mildew, and scab, but somewhat susceptible to cedar-apple rust. This tree is suitable for home orchards and organic growers.

The apple is large and very attractive, a deep rosy red all over with some russeting around the stem. The flesh is dense, crisp, and juicy, with a very sweet, uncomplicated flavor. An excellent apple for eating out-of-hand, it also stores well for over three months. In upstate New York, harvest is mid-October, about five weeks after McIntosh, between Northern Spy and Mutsu. The fruit hangs well on the tree and is a great choice for attracting wildlife.

Florina was bred in the 1970s in France from a mix of American varieties that includes Jonathan, Golden Delicious, Rome Beauty, and, of course, Malus floribunda for scab resistance.

Clean vs. Regular

Our clean scion is harvested from trees grown on G.16, which is extremely sensitive to viruses. These trees would not have survived if the scion contained viruses. Our clean wood has not been lab tested. Regular = may contain one of the common latent viruses; this is not usually a problem and can be used with most rootstocks.
