A very beautiful heirloom apple that stores well.
Chenango Strawberry Apple Scionwood (Spring 2025)
An early season, strawberry-scented heirloom with a very long harvest season. Also known as Sherwood's Favorite, Frank, Buckley, Early Sugar Loaf, Jackson Apple, Smyrna, Strawberry.
A medium-vigor tree with an upright-spreading to roundish habit, Chenango Strawberry needs to be pruned and thinned diligently to maintain annual bearing. It is somewhat susceptible to fireblight.
If you are wondering what that delicious, delicate aroma is, it might be a bowl of Chenango Strawberry apples. These large, tapered fruits have a unique and distinctive strawberry scent. Perfect for the home garden, they have an extremely long harvest period. In Old Southern Apples, Calhoun reports a harvest of Chenango Strawberry lasting from July 20 to September 17! The fruit is blushed red over a pale yellow background with meltingly tender, aromatic flesh. This apple has almost no keeping quality, and its tender flesh also rules it out for commercial production, but it remains a favorite for home orchards.
First described in 1854, it is unclear whether Chenango Strawberry was first propagated in New York or Connecticut. Some sources report that it was first planted by a man named Frank, and that it was also known by that name.
