Like most old cider varieties, Bedan tends to biennialism. The tree is precocious, and productive, and it is resistant to scab but susceptible to fireblight. Apples will hang well on the tree. This apple is predominantly used in cider production; it is not typically esteemed for fresh eating.

The apple is a golden orange when fully ripe. The flesh is firm and white. It produces a deep amber, bittersweet juice with a high Brix. Wilding Orchards writes: "This year (2016) we had a few Bedan produce fruit. These small fruit had high sugar levels (Brix 14) with very low acid and a subtle, slightly musky tannin in the background." This mild, fragrant juice is typically used in blends.
