Sundance™ Apple Scionwood (Spring 2023)

A fully disease-resistant, late-season, yellow apple. Also known as Co-op 29.

This tree is perfect for organic growers or home gardeners. It is field immune to scab, moderately resistant to powdery mildew, highly resistant to cedar-apple rust, and highly resistant to fire blight. It has a very slight tendency to biennialism, which can be easily countered with thinning. Due to its long ripening season, we recommend growing in zones 5 and above. However, the low chill requirement (500 hours) will be an advantage to many growers.

Sundance™ is a pale yellow apple that wears a pretty pink blush and scattered russeting. The flesh is medium to coarse grained, cream colored, very firm, very crisp and breaking. The flavor is spicy, full, and rich, a sprightly sub-acid that mellows in refrigerated storage. Fruit ripens mid-late October in upstate NY. It will hang on the tree until overripe, and it retains texture and flavor for five months or more in refrigerated storage. This is also a great apple for baking and sauce.

Sundance is the result of a cross between Golden Delicious and 1050 NJ 1, through which it counts Winter Banana, McIntosh, Rome, and Malus floribunda (for disease resistance) as ancestors. This apple was released for testing in 1964.

Clean vs. Regular

Our clean scion is harvested from trees grown on G.16, which is extremely sensitive to viruses. These trees would not have survived if the scion contained viruses. Our clean wood has not been lab tested. Regular = may contain one of the common latent viruses; this is not usually a problem and can be used with most rootstocks.
